The United Nations proclaimed May 22 The International Day for Biological Diversity (IBD) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. The date commemorates the adoption of the text of the Convention on 22 May 1992 by the Nairobi Final Act of the Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Each year BEAN promotes a day of local action and awareness to engage Ontarians in events and activities that involve communities, organizations and individuals in the conservation of biodiversity. Examples of past events include restoration plantings, guided nature walks, and garlic mustard removal in local woodlots. In some years financial support is available for groups undertaking events in recognition of Biodiversity Day. Visit BEAN’s IBD pages for more information.
