In celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity (Biodiversity Day), individuals and organizations from across Ontario and around the globe are making sure they are part of the plan to conserve and restore biodiversity.

So what’s the plan? It’s The Biodiversity Plan!

“Be part of the Plan”, is the theme for this year’s Biodiversity Day on May 22, 2024. It’s a call to action for all stakeholders to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity by supporting the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, also known as The Biodiversity Plan.

The Biodiversity Plan sets out an ambitious path to reach the global vision of a world living in harmony with nature by 2050. The plan includes four goals for 2050 and 23 targets for 2030 and you can learn more about them here.

Ontario has a plan too!

Closer to home, Ontario’s Biodiversity Strategy is our call to action and road map to conserve the genetic, species and ecosystem diversity for this and future generations.

Working together across diverse groups to achieve the targets in Ontario’s Biodiversity Strategy will contribute to national and international efforts such as Canada’s National Biodiversity Strategy (in development) and the goals and targets set out in The Biodiversity Plan.

Biodiversity doesn’t know borders.

As we implement Ontario’s Biodiversity Strategy and contribute to The Biodiversity Plan, we are part of a larger global effort to acknowledge the importance of biodiversity to our lives and take steps to protect it.

The Convention for Biological Diversity states, “The conservation of biodiversity is a common concern for humankind.”  As we celebrate Biodiversity Day, we invite you to be part of the plan!
