The United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is the overarching framework for global action to conserve biological diversity, advance the sustainable use of its components and ensure the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. Canada hosts the Secretariat to the Convention in Montreal, Q.C.
The Council aims to help Canada achieve its biodiversity conservation objectives by assisting Canadian businesses that are prepared to show leadership in biodiversity conservation through managing their facilities and activities in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner. A Biodiversity BC steering committee was formed in 2005 to develop the provincial biodiversity strategy. The committee comprises representatives of conservation non-government organizations (NGOs) and the provincial, federal, and local governments. The scope of the strategy includes the full range of land and freshwater biodiversity in B.C., including species such as salmon and seabirds that also spend time in the ocean environment. The intent of the strategy is to provide a roadmap of priorities for NGOs, industry, governments including First Nations, and everyone else with an interest in conserving B.C.’s diverse natural wealth. The California Biodiversity Council (CBC) was formed in 1991 to improve coordination and cooperation between the various resource management and environmental protection organizations at federal, state, and local levels. Strengthening ties between local communities and governments has been a focus of the Council by way of promoting strong local leadership and encouraging comprehensive solutions to regional issues.
